Prometheus Staged
Title/Subject: Meditation 2
The Overture Chorus is the perfect opportunity to establish the eerie scene of Prometheus Bound. For this portion of the play I would dress the actors in the chorus in modern street clothes. Torches or candles they carry on with them would illuminate their faces, but not until the line “FIRE” is spoken. All other actors would be masked. During the chorus the lights of a blue dawn will slowly come up on a back screen to reveal the looming mountain on the stage. This mountain would be constructed using a tall ramp made to look like a jagged rock face. The ramp would be turned to its side with its highest point on stage right. All character entrances would come from stage left with the exception of the chorus.
Prometheus’ chains should be fairly long and loose enough so the actor playing him can stand and struggle against their weight. It is important that the audience can hear them when he is raging to get free or cursing Zeus’ name. Drums and the occasional flute flourish would accompany the chorus. The chorus would only congregate in front of or at the base of the rock. Some subtle light changes would be interesting during Prometheus’ speech, especially as he describes how he gave fire to humans (red lights). Adding a few exciting elements like Hermes descending on a wire would add an interesting effect. One could really notice and appreciate these few bits of show in such a minimalist setting.

I like the idea of having torches or candels lighting up their faces after the word fire is spoken. That would be a great and effective effect. I also did not even think about loose chains so the actor could move around, that is also a good idea. The lighting effects and Hermes on a wire would also add a great deal to your background. I think it would keep the audience even more interested.
Concurrence about the candles Kyle. i think it adds well, especially if we always have the humans holding them to emphasize Prometheus’s gift of fire. I also find it interesting that many of us have the chorus in street clothes. (Is anyone else thinkin zeit geist?) It seems we all want to show the chorus as "of the people. I’m definitely feeling you on the drums too could be a great attention/tension builder for the more dramatic moments.

I like the idea about the chains being long enough for Prometheus to struggle against them and bang the around. It would help to portray his frustration in not being able to free himself or help those around him. I also like the minimalist set but with the little bits of show like Hermes descending on the wire, something like that could help show how low Prometheus is on the God-ladder.
You planned out your staging of Prometheus Bound very well, it is very descriptive and makes it very easy for the reader to understand what you want to convey. However I think that you might need to explain what you mean by using a ramp on its side for the mountain- I think I understand that it would be to climb up, but I don’t understand exactly how it would look. I especially like the specificity you put into the opening and closing scenes, in the detail you use about the Overture chorus and Hermes, those are two important parts that should be emphasized. And I agree that adding a few exciting elements would be just what this play needs to make it great with the bare set and the minimalist aspects it entails.
I think your ideas are very original; especially you idea to have the chorus dressed in modern street clothes as opposed to the clothes the Greeks wore in this time period. I think the blue light on the back screen is very effective to portray dawn. I would want to hear in more detail how you would position Prometheus in the rock. Would he be high up or just a few feet off the ground? I also envisioned Prometheus struggling with the chains for a dramatic effect. I also like your use of red lights when Prometheus is ranting.
