Meditation 12
This play cracked me up. Much like my meditation over Misanthrope this play really reminds me of a real life situation, for the most part. Many times in my life I’ve heard stories about what had happened latest. When I read the play it seemed sad that basically all these people did was tell stories, but when I thought about it, what dominates our conversations at the lunch table or as we walk from class to class? It is usually about someone else, and it is usually something we did not hear from the person themselves. Many times I’ll catch myself listening to the story and getting caught up in it, then a few days later it turns out to be just a rumor started. When reading I like to think that we are nothing like this play at all. In reality however, our lives are almost a copy of this play except for some over exaggerations.

I had the same exact reaction when reading this play. I thought to myself "hey, that happened to me last weekend!" We talk about other people, its only natural. Plus, if we were to eliminate all the rumors, stories, and gossip from our conversations, we would have nothing to talk about...ever. Perhaps that is why people like this play so much, because it is like real life, and everyone can relate to it!
I'm not so sure we wouldn't have anything to talk about. For instance, we could discuss the age-old problems of poverty, oppression, war, etc. But I think I know exactly why we don't: it's fucking depressing. Gossip is just a quick guilt-free way that we can relate to one another and most of the time it is harmless. Perhaps we need to realize that it is just a distraction. The middle class has been taught that it has no business discussing the issues of the poor or the rich. We have collectively distanced ourselves from debate and silenced ourselves by allowing frivolity to dominate our conversations. It's gotten so bad that when we do actually open up the forum its approached like gossip. I can't tell you how many politcal discussions I have gotten into that somehow ended up with talk of a politician's sexuality. It is really of no consequence but as long as mainstream media continues to give this bullshit air time, there's no end in sight. I know it's wrong but this is why I am apathetic.

I also found the play pretty funny. It is pretty humurous to me know watching middle school girls fight over nothing. I turn on MTV if I want to see some girls mad about something.
