When Karma bites back

I absolutely love this play. I love the play on words and the irony that is built into it. It really reminds me of dramatic shows like "Dawson's Creek" or some soap opera. The intense relationships between characters and the humor in most of the lines was a great addition to the play. I especially loved the part when Celimene is talking about Arsinoe, basically saying bad things about her behind her back, but then as soon as she shows up, she acts like they are best friends. Straight from Mean Girls, in my opinion. I also loved the first Act when Oronte is reading his sonnet and Alceste is telling him what he truly things of the sonnet, saying that it was a rediculously horrible sonnet, and my favorite line of the whole play "Oh, blast the close; you'd better close your face" (Act 1, lines 333-334). Every time I read over this I can just see someone completely playing up the humor in this scene and it just sounds funny in my mind. The ending is absolutely wonderful when the letter that Celimene wrote and the truth about her other feelings are exposed and no one ends up together like one would expect. Out of all the plays we have read, this one is by far one of my favorites!

I find it interesting that you compare this play to "Dawson's Creek." I suppose that there are some similarities between the love triangles and humor in modern sit-coms and The Misanthrope. I do agree with you that the play had an enjoyable ending. The entire time I was reading the play I kept hoping Celimene would get caught trash talking her friends. I was pleased to see she did not get away with her gossip.

I really like the title of your meditation. While i guess karma is not a "true" thing it sure does seem to happen many times. I know tons of people who will do something wrong and before you know it something bad happens back to them. Also, people are like people in the movie mean girls. While I did not like that movie it can be compared to this play in how some of the characters act.

I think you have an excellent point, the whole show was very "high school", if you will. Not that it wasn't thoroughly entertaining, because playing on such trivial points like gossip helped the story along.

I really like this play also it reminded me so much of junior high school. Back then for some reason I had interest in what other people were doing. Now I could careless what is going on. The Mean Girls reference was funny that was the first thing that came to mind when I read the play. A bunch of girls arguing.

I love Mean Girls and definitely had a little high school version on this play going in my head when I read it. I was just waiting for the "wild animals by the watering hole" scene and I do believe that it almost got that intense!
